An African in Britain - Ignatius Sancho, is a picture book biography developed as part of my MA studies.
Charles Ignatius Sancho was born on a slave ship. His extraordinary Transatlantic journey takes him from the West coast of Africa to the coast of Colombia, and then on to Great Britain, where he rises from the depths of adversity to thrive at the very heart of Georgian London society.
This picture book biography is a celebration of Sancho's life achievements as a letter-writer, composer, shopkeeper and abolitionist. It is a story of human resilience and resourcefulness: a celebration of the magical transformative power of reading and writing.
